At the point where the prefecture of Rethymno meets Chania, east of Georgioupolis beaches, we find the beaches of Kavros and Kournas. Between this remaining virgin parts of the beach there is an extensive and very important ecosystem of dunes. The dunes of Kavros, like all dunes, host a significant and very fragile ecosystem that is home to its own plants. It is a sandy beach, with clear shallow waters, but unfortunately, because it is open to the winds, it often has quite strong waves. Visitors have access to several amenities, including restaurants and cafes or bars, so you can spend the whole day here. There are also unorganized sections for those who prefer a quieter spot. While it is on the main road between Chania and Rethymno and relatively close to Georgioupoli, the beach is always quiet. Tamarisk trees offer a cool spot to sit away from the sun. This area of Crete island is great for families with children and known for its relaxed and laid back vibe.
