Agios Nikolaos is one of the fairytale churches of Crete and a trademark of Georgioupolis. It is also built on a small rocky islet, on the beach of Georgioupolis, and the only way to reach it is by walking on the stone walkway that the locals built in the sea.
This small church, which in combination with the open sea creates a unique picturesque landscape, has at times been an ideal cinematic setting for films that have been shot on the island. It is dedicated to Agios Nikolaos, the patron saint of sailors and the Greek Navy, which is why it is built in the waves.
The seaside Agios Nikolaos could not find a more suitable “home” than the one that the locals built for him to enjoy, both for themselves and for the thousands of tourists who visit Georgioupolis in the summer.
Inside, the church is small and simple, with a wooden iconostasis and the icon of the Saint laden with offerings.
